Question by Chloe-Louise95: What are the for Syne?
I’m wondering what the lyrics for Auld Lang Syne are and the traditions behind it. Is it just a festive song or can it be sang all year round? And when is the right time to sing it? Thanks for your help.

    Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
    And never brought to mind?
    Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
    And auld lang syne!

Chorus.-For auld lang syne, my dear,
    For auld lang syne.
    We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
    For auld lang syne.

It’s usually sung on new years eve!! :)

    Info about the song:
“Auld Lang Syne” (Scots pronunciation: [ˈɔːld lɑŋˈsəin]: note “s” rather than “z”) is a Scottish poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of a traditional folk song. It is well known in many English-speaking (and other) countries and is often sung to celebrate the start of the New Year at the stroke of midnight. By extension, its use has also become common at funerals, graduations, and as a farewell or ending to other occasions.

    The Lyrics:
    Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
    And never brought to mind?
    Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
    And auld lang syne?

    CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
    For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak a cup of kindness yet,
    For auld lang syne!

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp,
    And surely I’ll be mine,
And we’ll tak a cup o kindness yet,
    For auld lang syne!

We twa hae run about the braes,
    And pou’d the gowans fine,
    But we’ve wander’d monie a weary fit,
    Sin auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl’d in the burn
    Frae morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
    Sin auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand my trusty fiere,
    And gie’s a hand o thine,
    And we’ll tak a right guid-willie waught,
    For auld lang syne

    Meanings

The song’s Scots title may be translated into English literally as “old long since”, or more idiomatically, “long long ago

    Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
    Should old acquaintance be forgot,
    and old lang syne ?

    CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
    for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
    for auld lang syne.
And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !
and surely I’ll buy mine !
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
    for auld lang syne.

    CHORUS
We two have run about the slopes,
    and picked the daisies fine ;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
    since auld lang syne.

    CHORUS
We two have paddled in the stream,
    from morning sun till dine† ;
But seas between us broad have roared
    since auld lang syne.

    CHORUS
And there’s a hand my trusty friend !
And give us a hand o’ thine !
    And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
    for auld lang syne.

    CHORUS
